It’s really easy to go overboard with spending during winter. As the cold months arrive, we are prone to think that we will be needing a new heater, new wardrobe, new boots, new this and new that. Here are some tips and advice on how to save some money this winter in Sydney.

#1: Shop during the sale period

Durh! Of course you shop during the sale period. Stock up on essentials such as socks, hosiery, sleepwear and other winter warmers. This will also be the best time to purchase a heater.

#2: Minimise the use of electricity

This will be one of the biggest bill along with gas (if you use gas heating). Think about this – do you really need to turn on the heater if you put on a second layer of jumper? If you feel cold, put those socks, thermals and extra jumper on instead of turning on the heater. Also, by closing the windows and pulling the curtains during the day, you will retain more heat inside and this will help to keep the rooms warm.

#3: Stockpile on soups

Always hungry during winter? That’s normal as your body uses food to warm itself up. Instead of hitting the shops and paying for a $10 bowl of soup, head down to your local supermarket and look for the “Pitango” brand of organic soups. They are hearty and wholesome and approximately $7. Serves 2 though.

Alternatively, pick a good day with all the ingredients that you need for good chicken stock and make your own stock in one hit. Allow the stock to cool, store them in airtight containers and off into the freezer they go. Whenever, you are feeling hungry, just go to the freezer and microwave the frozen stock. The best part is a whole chicken costs only $10 or less and you will be able to experience many many warming meals of soups for the days to come. :)
